My Thoughts on the Mission Committee

I thought I would put down on paper some of my personal thoughts about what I think we need to be focusing upon as a committee. In my thoughts are some bullet points on where I think the "C" fits. Let me know what you think.

The Central Florida YMCA Mission Committee
We build strong kids, strong families, strong communities

Association’s Mission
To improve lives of all in Central Florida by connecting individuals, families, and communities with opportunities base on Christian values that strengthen Spirit, Mind, and Body.

Core Values
Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, and Faith

Focus of the Central Florida Mission Committee

1. To see the Central Florida YMCA’s Core Values reflected in our facilities, programming, staff, volunteers, & members.

2. To enlist the faith community in collaborating with the Central Florida YMCA in living out the association’s Core Values.

The “C” in the YMCA

1. Through the “C”…
a. We acknowledge the YMCA’s strong Christian heritage.
b. We discover our Core Values.
c. We find our unique collaboration with the Christian community.
d. We find the focus of our Core Value of Faith.

2. With the “C”…
a. We acknowledge our Core Values are not exclusively Christian.
b. We open our doors to people of all faiths.
c. We intentionally seek mutual connections of mission with other faiths.

Focus of the FBI Director …

1) To assist in starting mission committees in the family centers.
2) To provide spiritual chaplaincy to the staff and members of the YMCA
3) To establish, nurture, and foster relationships with the faith community
4) To promote the Central Florida YMCA’s Core Values
5) To coordinate the key events planned by the Mission Committee

Key Strategies

1) To develop, nurture, and resource Mission Committees in each of the Central Florida YMCA Family Centers.

Key to the Mission Committee’s success is the establishment of Mission Committees in each of the association’s Family Centers. These Mission Committees become the collaborative point for the faith community and the responsible entity for the Core Values being reflected in each Family Center.

Some Potential Tasks and Goals
a) Create a “How-To Instructional Pack” for starting a Mission Committee.
b) 2009 – 15 Functioning Mission Committees

2) To focus Mission Committees upon promoting the Core Values in their Family Center’s facilities, programs, staff, volunteers, and members.
What do Mission Committee’s do? They encourage, promote, program, and evaluate the incorporation of the association’s Core Values in the following areas…
- The Family Center’s Facilities
- The Family Center’s Staff
- The Family Center’s Programs
- The Family Center’s Volunteers
- The Family Center’s Membership

Beyond the utilization of the existing resources of the YMCA, the Mission Committee intentionally engages the faith community in accomplishing these tasks.

Some Potential Tasks and Goals
a) Create a growing list of resources and ideas for each of the Core Values for each of the above listed areas (Facilities, staff, programs, volunteers, membership)

- Devotions for staff & coaches
- Signage
- Campaigns

b) Encourage Mission Committees to focus on a Core Value each month.

3) To create events and opportunities where the faith community collaborates with the Central Florida YMCA in living out the Y’s Core Values.

As a servant to the community, the Central Florida YMCA provides the ideal environment for the diverse faith community to gather and collaborate in living out their shared mission found in the Y’s Core Values. Therefore, the Mission Committee will provide events and opportunities where the faith community…
- Has the opportunity to be exposed to the Y’s Core Values
- Has the opportunity to engage in the Y’s Core Values

Some Potential Tasks and Goals
a) Celebration of Prayer Events
b) National Day of Prayer
c) Clergy Gatherings
d) Y Sundays

4) To ensure that the Core Values of the Central Florida YMCA permeate its staff, programming, and events.

From a Metro Office perspective, the Mission Committee is charged with the task of encouraging, promoting, resourcing and evaluating the incorporation of the association’s Core Values in all aspects of the association.

Some Potential Tasks and Goals
a) Teaching the association’s Core Values in employee orientation

b) Encouraging and resourcing the focusing of “mission and devotional moments” and moments upon a Core Value
